Samson’s oil and natural gas activities originate from our headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma and include most major oil and gas regions in North America. Some key producing regions and basins for Samson are East Texas, Texas Gulf Coast, Anadarko, Permian, San Juan, Green River, and the Williston Basin.
Samson operates more than 4,000 wells and has interests in more than 11,000 wells. Production operations are a core strength at Samson and the company operates more than 80% of its total production. Our experienced and resourceful field employees carefully monitor production from our wells to ensure that the value of these assets is optimized by controlling costs and increasing production. Using an integrated field management approach, Samson successfully generates ideas for production enhancements and cost reductions, which flow to and from the field through the engineering and field operations staffs.
Samson is an active driller in the United States and annually spends well over a billion dollars a year in drilling new wells. It will operate the drilling of close to 500 wells and will drill more than 1 million feet of new hole in a single year. A significant portion of our drilling is in regional and semi-regional tight and unconventional oil and gas accumulations. These large accumulations are typically known as “Resource Plays” and the critical risk in these plays is optimizing drilling and completion practices. Samson has competitive advantages in this area and is currently active in the Granite Wash, Bakken, Haynesville, Deep Bossier, Woodford and Marcellus plays. We believe our participation in these areas will continue to lead to profitable drilling opportunities for a significant time to come.
Over the last 5 years, Samson has:
- Doubled its workforce
- Increased capital investment in drilling by 400%
- Significantly increased investments in land, 3-D seismic, technology, training, and development programs
- Dramatically increased production and drilling in the United States and the Gulf of Mexico

Samson also drills numerous wells in more conventional areas and plays such as the on-shore Texas Gulf Coast where the critical risk management technique is to successfully image and analyze the sub-surface strata. Resolving these issues with high-resolution 3-D seismic programs, Samson has drilled some of the most successful wells in the State of Texas. In 2008, seven of the top ten producing wells in this prolific state were drilled and operated by Samson.
Our diverse drilling and production asset base ensures a solid portfolio of opportunities to evaluate and drill thousands of locations over the next several years.

In additional to our extensive domestic lease acquisition and drilling programs, we continue to add to our domestic reserve base by acquiring additional properties, either as individual asset packages or on a whole company basis. Samson has a long and successful history of acquisitions and once the deal is closed, we work diligently to:
- Develop the properties’ reserve potential
- Maximize production
- Reduce costs
As a financially strong, private company, Samson is well positioned to close quickly on all acquisitions and can complete all-cash transactions in excess of $1 billion. Having successfully evaluated and negotiated the purchase of thousands of property purchases of all sizes, Samson draws on a highly experienced team to add to its profitable growth through such acquisitions.
